Wonders of Plastics Essay Contest

The Southern Section of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) solicits essays for the 17th annual “Wonders of Plastics” essay contest. Open to all middle/junior high and high school students, the essay must be sponsored by a teacher and must meet certain requirements. The Southern Section members could forward this information to their local schools to encourage participation.

Topics to consider:

    Advantages of plastics in food packaging
    Creative use of recycled plastics
    How plastics benefit humankind
    How plastics improve our lifestyle
    Plastics in the environment
    Plastics usefulness in society
    What plastics has done for me
    Why the bad reputation of plastics is wrong

Entry must be received by Feb 1, 2009.

Judging:
Essays will be judged by a panel consisting of SPE members, an editor and a teacher. In order to be a finalist, the essay must meet all the conditions as stated in the organization and mechanics with only incidental errors in mechanics. It must meet the assigned minimum length and must be submitted following the prescribed format given on the website.

Winning Entry:
The winning entry for each participating local affiliation (Section) will be publicized in the Section’s Newsletter. In addition, the winning essay for each Section will be forwarded to SPE Headquarters for inclusion in the International Essay Contest. Southern Section winners receive $500-first prize, $300-second prize, $100-third prize.  The International Essay Contest winner will receive a plaque and $1,000 honorarium. An additional $1,000 will be given to the winner’s school.
