President’s Message May 2008
Section
Receives Husky Education Award
It is with
great pleasure to announce that the Southern Section is the recipient of the
Husky Education Award. Sponsored by Husky Injection Molding Systems, this award
provides $ 5000.00 to an SPE Section to enable them to advance the perception of
plastics at the local community level through plastics activities and programs.
We are very proud to receive this award and as outgoing President, I know the
section will put this award to good use in the community.
It has been
an exceptional year for the Southern Section with some very noteworthy events:
·
Southern Section
Receives Husky Education Award
·
Southern Section
Receives The Gold Pinnacle Award
·
Councilor Jamal
El-Hibri to receive The Honored Service Member Award at ANTEC
·
Southern Section
to host 2010 Blow Molding Division TopCon
·
Fully converting
our newsletter to electronic PDF format with links on the page actively
directing membership to website and/or email address.
To have
such a banner year requires hard work and dedication from all of our board
member and officers. I would like to take a moment and recognize each of their
efforts:
Danny
Robinson; President-Elect, was responsible for preparing the Pinnacle Award
Application and also our annual goals worksheets. Danny also served as a Proxy
Councilor earlier this year in Savannah, GA. It is with utmost confidence that
I turn the SPE “reins” over to Danny as next year’s Section President.
Rudy
Underwood; Vice President, Newsletter Editor, Advertising Chairman, kept our
newsletter fresh and exciting and also gave an excellent talk during our Annual
Resin Update on Polyolefin’s. Rudy was responsible for converting our
newsletter to electronic format and as our Advertising Chairman continues to be
the driving force for generating revenue to offset the cost of publishing our
newsletter as well as keeping the website up to date.
Dale
Wilson; Outgoing Treasurer, did a fantastic job of keeping our books in balance
and also had the dubious task of filing the sections income taxes with the IRS.
This is no small task and the section is extremely grateful for his contribution
as Treasurer and former Secretary.
Bob Bailey;
Treasurer and House Chairman, served as the nuts and bolts behind Technical
Program coordination and also kept our books balanced and in the black for
2008.
Suresh
Sriram; Secretary, did a great job of keeping minutes for our board meetings.
Bert
Blanchard; Immediate Past President & Awards Chairman, was most helpful in
providing guidance and also contributing to the Technical Programs by providing
an update on events at the K-Show. Bert is also responsible for bringing this
month’s speaker to Atlanta and was instrumental in bringing the Husky Education
Award to the section.
Jamal El-Hibri;
Councilor & Past President, tirelessly represented the Southern Section at all
SPE International Council meetings and will receive The Honored Service Member
Award this year. Jamal was also highly instrumental in persuading The Blow
Molding Division to hold their 2010 TopCon in Atlanta.
Bill
Thielemann; Membership Chairman & Past President, can always be counted on to
volunteer and provide excellent advice on moving the section forward and in the
correct direction. Bill was also heavily involved in negotiations with bringing
the Blow Molding Division to Atlanta for their 2010 TopCon.
Dong Yao;
Education Chairman, was heavily depended on for coordinating the Student Essay
Contest and also for his involvement with the Husky Education Award
Application. Dong also serves as the Chairman for the Student Chapter at
Georgia Tech.
Bill Smith;
Executive Vice President SPE International & Past President, does a fantastic
job on the International Level and is invaluable at providing leadership and
direction regarding items that are of particular importance to the section.
Bill was also heavily involved with planning and directing this year’s golf
outing.
Phil
Jacoby; Past President & Board Member, for his guidance over this past year and
also contributing to the sections Technical Programs by giving an insightful
talk on Nucleating Agents.
Leslie
Bigott; Board Member & Past President – Texas, for providing her input
throughout the year on matters that affect the section.
Lastly, I
would like to say that it has been an exceptional honor to serve with the above
individuals throughout the year and also serve as your Section President. I
have found the last 5 years as an officer an extremely rewarding and fulfilling
experience.
In closing,
please make plans to attend the Annual Golf Outing on May 19th in
Conyers, GA. Immediately following the outing will be a technical presentation
on Liquid Silicone Rubber Molding (LSR) presented by Mr. Mark Hammon with
Engel.
